Tales of a (College) Librarian: what we actually do and why we do it

In this talk, Steven will highlight the range of different tasks required of a College Librarian in an effort to dispel the myth that we simply sit in a sleepy corner of our colleges reading books or poring over medieval manuscripts all day.  Using examples his career so far, he will talk about some of the highs and lows of working in these unique environments with one or two (hopefully) amusing anecdotes along the way.

Bio
Steven Archer is the Sub-Librarian at Trinity College, Cambridge where he manages the day-to-day running of a large college library, overseeing reader services, rare books and special collections, the College Archive and the Wren Digital Library.

Before joining Trinity in September 2020, Steven was the College Librarian at Trinity’s sister college in Oxford, Christ Church, and before that had worked as Curator and Digital Projects Librarian at the Parker Library, Cambridge and as Assistant Librarian at Christ’s College, Cambridge.  His only hiatus outside of Oxbridge college libraries was spent as Head of Reference at the London Library.

Tour info
After the talk, Steven will lead a tour of the Wren Library where there will be a chance to admire Wren’s architecture and to see a specially curated display of treasures from across the Library’s holdings.

Please note that the meeting room and the Library are only accessible by a flight of stairs; there is no lift access.

Peter Lund and Colleagues will give CLG a tour of the Library and a tour of the Special Collections.

SPRI - The Scott Polar Research Institute, established in 1920 as part of the University of Cambridge, is a centre of excellence in the study of the Arctic and Antarctic. Research covers both the natural and social sciences and is often interdisciplinary. The Institute also houses the World's premier Polar Library, extensive archival, photographic and object collections of international importance on the history of polar exploration, and a Polar Museum with displays of both the history and contemporary significance of the Arctic and Antarctic and their surrounding seas.

The library service supports research into the contemporary significance of the Arctic, Antarctic and glaciology. The 91,000 catalogued holdings cover subjects from climate change to geopolitics and everything on snow and ice. Extensive special collections include archives, rare books, maps and photographs covering the history of polar exploration. During the period 2015-19 I project managed the National Lottery Heritage funded "By Endurance We Conquer - the Shackleton Project" which funded targeted acquisitions by the Library, Polar Museum, Archives and Picture Library.
