Visit to Queens’ Libraries, including the Old Library current exhibition: Sultans, Syntax & Scripture: Encountering the Islamic World at Queens' (1550-1700).
Queens’ Library is divided into two parts: a student library (called the War Memorial Library) comprising c. 35,000 books, and the Old Library, containing c. 30,000 early printed books and manuscripts. The latter retains the building it had soon after the college’s foundation in 1448 by Margaret of Anjou and is thus the earliest library reading room in Cambridge. The War Memorial Library is situated in what was the college’s chapel. First constructed in 1448-9, this underwent extensive remodelling in 1993-4, making it an attractive space for students to work in.
The visit will include refreshments (tea/coffee biscuits) a tour of the libraries, and a brief curator’s talk on the exhibition.
Meeting place - Munro Room in Old Court. Please report to Queens' porter's lodge on Silver St. and follow directions.
Accessibility information - the Munro Room (for refreshments) is on ground floor. The Old Library and most of the Student Library involves a flight of stairs. Flooring is very uneven in the Old Library.
The tour is limited to 20 spaces and will finish by 7pm.
