Thursday 21st September 23: Tour of Pembroke College Library 

Visit Pembroke College for a rare change to see inside the beautiful Waterhouse Library.

Meet at 5.20pm at the Porter's Lodge for a 5.30pm start (estimated duration 1 hour).

Wednesday 18th October 23: CLG AGM followed by a talk from Alastair Flett, Deputy University Librarian & Director of Academic Services. 

Alastair will be reflecting on the pleasures, challenges and surprises of his first year as Cambridge’s Deputy University Librarian, the career path that brought him here, and how he’s definitely still learning…

Alastair is Deputy University Librarian and Director of Academic Services at the University of Cambridge. He has responsibility for: Collection Development and Management, Education and Reader Services, Faculty and Departmental Libraries, and the Office for Scholarly Communications.

Prior to joining Cambridge in June 2022, Alastair was Deputy Director: Libraries, Museums and Galleries at University of Liverpool. Alastair started his professional life as a librarian, first with the NHS, then at the University of Manchester, but spent the middle period of his career in a variety of Professional Services roles at Liverpool, including being the University’s Head of Operational Planning, Head of Corporate Governance and Support, and Clerk to Council.

AGM will start promptly at 5.45pm in SG2. 

Alistair's talk will start at 6.05pm followed by time for questions.

22nd November 23: Anne-Lise Harding, House of Commons Library

Join us online for a talk from Anne-Lise Harding, from the House of Commons Library. 

Bio: Anne-Lise Harding (she/elle) is Strategic Training Lead at the House of Commons and Deputy Chair of the CILIP Information Literacy Group (ILG).  

Anne-Lise’s interests lie in information literacy, education, and inclusion. After graduating with an MA in Librarianship in 2011, Anne-Lise held several roles in the education sector; making the transition to the government sector in 2020.   

In her role, Anne-Lise oversees the quality and impact of the training delivered by the House of Commons Library, encompassing both continual professional development and training for Members of Parliament and their staff. She is leading on Information Literacy work to make research supporting parliamentary research more diverse, inclusive, and representative.  

Anne-Lise recently co-authored a chapter on informed society and representative democracy in “The Ideas-Informed Society” (Emerald Publishing). 

About the talk

In this talk, Anne-Lise will talk about her transition from the academic librarianship world to the government sector. She will discuss her roles in the House of Commons Library and how she has used the skills gained in the education sector to enhance her projects and progress. Anne-Lise will also go over the work to bring information literacy instruction to the House of Commons and give practical advice.

15th December 23: Christmas Board Game Get Together

Join us for a Christmas Board Game Get Together: catch up with CLG members and celebrate the end of the first quarter of the programme.

Refreshments will be provided at a modest charge.

5th January 2024: Twelfth Night at CUP Bookshop


Join us at the Cambridge University Press Bookshop for a Twelfth Night Celebration. Browse the bookshop and catch up with colleagues and friends.

This is a members only event and starts at 6pm.

21st February 2024: ZSL London Library talk with Emma Milnes, Deputy Librarian

Bio: Emma has worked at ZSL Library for the past 14 years, initially on a temporary contract as a Retrospective Book Cataloguer and gradually progressing to her current role as Deputy Librarian. While her professional journey commenced with book cataloging, Emma's true passion at ZSL is combining her appreciation for special collections, history, and community engagement.

About the talk:

In her upcoming talk, Emma aims to offer a glimpse into the world of ZSL and its Library & Archives, sharing insights into her experiences along the way. She will discuss both the highlights and the challenges that have shaped her role. Emma will also reflect on her career, tracing her transition from a bookseller to a librarian in a zoological setting, providing an exploration of the various chapters that have defined her path.

14th March 2024: Visit and Tour of Museum of Technology, Riverside Cambridge

Join us for a tour of the Museum of Technology as well as a talk by volunteer David Stubbings on the history of the site and its development of the Museum. The tour and talk will take approximately 1.5 hours.

Venue: Pye Building, at the Cheddars Lane end of the Cambridge Museum of Technology site.

The tour will include some walking, and there is level route access to avoid steps if required. There is car parking on site, or nearby in Tesco Newmarket Road, for those coming by car.

11th April 2024: Visit and Tour of Emmanuel College Library

Join us for a tour of the library of Emmanuel College – founded in 1584, it is one of the last ‘old’ colleges of the university, boasting a chapel by Sir Christopher Wren, sprawling gardens and a secret tunnel. The tour will explore the library building, originally designed in 1909, with its amalgam of Arts & Crafts, Tudor, and Classical styles, and its large reading room, still in use today. Almost exactly 100 years later, the modern extension to the library was completed, offering modern work and study facilities, plenty of book stacks, and exhibition spaces, where some of the treasures of the library’s special collection will be on show.

Time: 5.30 pm at Porter's Lodge, Emmanuel College. This is on St Andrew's Street, opposite Downing Street.

The tour will last 1-1.5 hours in total and this is a members only event and has a limit of 20 people.
 
30th May 2024: Graduate Trainee Talk
 
Zia Ortega (Anglia Ruskin University), Liz White (Trinity College), Anna Piper-Thompson (Queens' College) and Grace Hogan (Pembroke College) will be sharing their experiences of being Library Graduate Trainees.

Graduate Traineeships are one-year fixed term training posts intended to provide valuable work experience prior to pursuing a postgraduate qualification in Library and Information Studies. Part of a cohort of 7, the Cambridge trainees are based at different libraries but have a shared programme of visits throughout the year to introduce them to different areas of librarianship and help them consider their future career. You can read about some of their visits on their blog.

Join CLG to listen to the trainees talk about their individual responsibilities and projects, reflect on their experience so far, and share their future plans, followed by a Q&A.

Location and time: G24, Faculty of Law, Sidgwick Site, Cambridge, 5.30pm for refreshments and a 6pm start.

12th June 2024: Cambridge University Press and Assessment Libraries

Caitlin Sinclair, Library and Archive Controller, Cambridge University Press and Assessment, will talk about the huge closed-off collection of Press publications - around 200,000 books and 50,000 journals that she manages day-to-day, with the earliest title going back to 1814. She also assists with the journals digital archive workflows which serve our online platform, Cambridge Core.  Her talk will aim to help CLG understand what Caitlin's team does and why they exist.
